Simulations

Simulations provide an opportunity for students in commercial diplomacy to practice advocacy skills while addressing real world issues in commercial diplomacy. Unlike case studies, which are historical, the simulations are drawn from real-world situations on current outstanding issues. Simulations of press conferences are a core part of a hands-on-approach to professional training in Commercial Diplomacy. They provide a nuts-and-bolts perspective that is an excellent way to train trade professionals. Simulations teach students how to integrate material from different areas of knowledge such as business, economics, politics, law, culture, public policy and science; how to simplify and focus complex issues to the priority issues; and how to make decisions in the face of imperfect information and the time pressures typical in the real world. The section of the website dealing with simulations contains background materials and a simulation scenario on a number of current disputes. Confidential instructions for the stakeholders included in the simulation can be obtained from ICDP upon request. Students playing the role of particular stakeholder groups can be asked to present their views before and/or after a simulated negotiation, with all other participants playing the role of reporters. A well-written press release is key to getting reporters to write an accurate and focused account of an event or an organization’s views on a particular subject. Samples of press releases used in professional practice can be found in the section on sample documents under the category of press releases.
